Superintendent, Environment

Sparwood, BC, CA

Reporting to the General Manager, the Superintendent, Environment is responsible for working interactively with the department heads and senior personnel in the business unit and corporate Environment groups.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Provide proactive guidance and support to all areas on environmental and sustainability issues
  • Ensure appropriate process and procedures are developed and designed so that the operation maintains compliance with all environmental operating permits, including management of the Environmental Management System under ISO 14001
  • Raise the profile of environmental and sustainability practices and policies on site by working closely with and supporting the various operating groups
  • Develop and implement environmental programs on site in keeping with our regulatory and social license to operate
  • Collaborate actively as a part of broader Teck initiatives and best practice implementation as required
  • Develop working relationships with government agencies, Aboriginal groups, and other local communities of interest in coordination with the business unit
  • Participate in Teck’s Social, Environmental, and Regulatory Approvals (SERA) process for major mine permit applications, and coordinate non-major mine permitting activities in alignment with Teck’s Southeast Coal Permitting Program
  • Maintain strong working relationships and use a collaborative approach with the Mine Engineering team to facilitate an integrated planning process that drives short and long term value to the overall Operation
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and mentoring to personnel within the Environment group

 

Qualifications:

  • Engineering or Science degree or diploma in an environmental-related field, post-graduate degree or diploma would be an asset
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in environmental compliance, resource and project management, preferably in a mining or natural resource environment
  • Technical knowledge of federal and provincial compliance practices and regulations related to resource development is required
  • Excellent project management experience with a track record that includes management and technical direction of multiple environmental projects
  • Experience in environmental data management and reporting, including Environmental Management Systems
  • Strong leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, and can influence without having direct authority
  • Ability to multi-task and to meet challenges directly
