Senior Tailings Engineer

Reporting to the Senior Engineer Supervisor, the Senior Tailings Engineer is responsible for leading tailings operations and projects, and acting as the qualified person on-site to ensure design, construction, monitoring, and closure meet required guidelines and regulatory standards. 


To be successful in this role we require someone with strong interpersonal and communication skills, who is self-motivated, but can also collaborate and excel in a technical team based environment. Someone who has a demonstrated ability to influence others and has strong time management skills.

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Mentor and guide junior tailings engineers in support of their professional development
  • Lead operations and tailings project design work, including ensuring compliance with current monitoring requirements
  • Manage tailings activities in close proximity to the community and critical infrastructure through monitoring and modelling
  • Provide technical expertise, leadership, and training for both operations and technical personnel involved in tailings management; ensure standard methodologies are identified and followed
  • Provide technical review of study reports, drawings, design, and supervise consultants
  • Direct field work programs and interpret data from geotechnical site investigations and laboratory testing to determine type, classification, and geotechnical engineering characteristics of soils
  • Perform geotechnical analysis for embankments, tailings storage facilities, dams, and mine waste spoils
  • Collaborate closely with the Tailings Working Group, Independent Tailings Review Board, and Engineer of Record
  • Develop and maintain tailings specific documentation including emergency preparedness plans, and Operation, Maintenance, and Surveillance Manuals



  • Degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Geological Engineering or other relevant field
  • Minimum seven years operational, construction, or design work experience in the mining industry specific to tailings storage facilities
  • Registered, or able to register, as a Professional Engineer with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia
  • Project management experience, with PMP certification preferred
  • Detailed understanding of geotechnical investigation methods and analyses, slope stability analyses and software, soil mechanics, surface and subsurface monitoring systems, and database management
  • Experience working with regulators and Engineers of Record, and familiar with tailings guidelines and regulations
