Senior Lead, Fisheries Monitoring

Reporting to the Manager, Biodiversity and Reclamation, the Senior Lead, Aquatic Biodiversity is responsible for driving the aquatic components of our Biodiversity Management Program. This includes fish population monitoring, fish habitat offsetting, and regional fish habitat management planning for our Albert and BC coal operations.


To be successful we are looking for someone with outstanding organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, who can effectively collaborate with partners with varying backgrounds, and at different seniority levels. Someone who is a self-starter, has strong problem solving skills, and can prioritize contending demands. Most importantly, we require an individual with outstanding presentation and engagement abilities, who can maintain relationships with our communities of interest and be the go to person in this field.

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Work closely with other departments within the Environment and Social Responsibility team to advance sustainable aquatic biodiversity and fish and fish habitat management studies, monitoring programs, rehabilitation projects, and development of provincial and federal regulatory applications
  • Accountable for developing, implementing, and tracking budgets on an annual basis, and providing input and strategic advice on budget decisions and allocations
  • Provide strategic leadership at multi-stakeholder working groups, maintaining positive relationships with key partners in government, local communities, and Indigenous Nations
  • Build and strategize the implementation schedule of large-scale fish and fish habitat offsetting projects to support ongoing operations, future development projects, and regional initiatives
  • Provide critical review and guidance on permitting approaches and strategies, including required engagement activities, permitting schedules, and application approach, scope, and quality



  • Science or Engineering degree or diploma in an environmental-related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum seven years demonstrated ability in fisheries management leadership roles and large project management in the natural resource sector
  • Experience supervising or leading a team
  • Solid understanding of provincial and federal regulatory approvals practices, legislation and regulations relating to fish, fish habitat and aquatic resources
  • Solid understanding of the Federal Fisheries Act and experience in preparing Fisheries Act applications
  • Experience working with Indigenous Nations, regulatory agencies, and local communities
