Resource Modeling Specialist

Reporting to the Senior Project Geologist, the Resource Modeling Specialist is accountable to provide Geoscience Solutions and Services to Teck's Coal operations and greenfield sites by providing expertise to ensure the high standards in geology are maintained. The incumbent is also accountable for site training and support using the current mine planning (i.e. Hexagon’s MinePlan®) software and maintaining the corporate standards for modeling procedures in the business unit.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental guidelines and procedures.
  • Prepare and conduct project assignments as required.
  • Collaborate with the wider community of Geoscience practitioners across Teck to ensure professional best practices and standards are applied and shared.
  • Provide technical support to achieve leading practice acquisition, validation, analysis and modeling of geoscience data.
  • Identify and apply practical geoscience solutions to increase operational effectiveness and foresee development project challenges/opportunities.
  • Maintain and update documentation and standards for 3-D geological and resource modeling in Coal.
  • Maintain the non-operating geological models using all available and current information utilizing the MinePlan™ software. Ensure a library of current maps and cross-sections is maintained following each model update.
  • Organize, input and validate data utilizing Teck Coal’s geological database (acQuire™).
  • Maintain, improve and standardize coal reconciliation across all operations.
  • Provide training to Teck Coal Engineering and Geology employees in the use of modeling and mine planning (MinePlan™) software. (i.e. ensure that all new employees receive Introductory training as a minimum).
  • Provide advanced Training to selected personnel in building and using geological models and other related aspects of the MinePlan™ software and acQuire™ database.
  • Provide day-to-day support for MinePlan™ software for all operating sites.
  • Provide geological and model build assistance to operating sites as required.
  • Test and evaluate alternative software solutions including presentation of the value to the Coal business unit.
  • Liaising with Teck Digital Systems (TDS) and Hexagon personnel to ensure that current programming enhancements are being utilized, request the development of new programming enhancements as required to optimize the building and utilization of 3-D geological models.
  • Perform Model build audits on an annual basis for all operating sites to ensure adherence to standards and processes.
  • Assist in Reserve and Resource report preparation and review including attendance at annual Reserve/Resource review meetings on site.

 

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a post-secondary degree or diploma in Geological sciences or Engineering at a recognized university or technical school.
  • Eligible for professional designation in BC and Alberta.
  • Preferably a minimum of seven years relevant geological and/or mine planning experience.
  • Geological modeling experience using Hexagon Mining’s MinePlan™ mine planning software and competency with acQuire™ geoscientific management information system will be considered an advantage
  • Familiarity with GIS and geostatistical estimation methods would be considered an asset.
  • Successful candidates must be motivated self-starters, able to work under minimal supervision and be able to manage several priorities simultaneously.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain and teach technical concepts to business users.
  • Strong critical thinker with an aptitude for problem solving.
