Principal Engineer, Geotechnical

Reporting to the Manager, Geological Engineering, the Principal Engineer, Geotechnical is responsible for providing expert level guidance, direction, and support to site based geological engineering personnel along with, supporting the geotechnical needs of four operating mine sites, multiple development projects, two non-operating sites, and managing various projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Serve as a geotechnical subject matter expert for active surface mining operations, investigation and design of mine extensions, and post-mining geotechnical monitoring and assessment for non-operating sites.
  • Apply geotechnical expertise to rock slopes, waste rock dumps, blast vibration analysis, soil slopes and foundations,
  • Stamp professional reports, as required
  • Design and implement programs (both technical and training) to identify, eliminate, or mitigate geotechnical hazards, close gaps, and improve designs
  • Train and mentor geotechnical engineering personnel
  • Commission, project manage and review work by external geotechnical and hydrogeological consultants
  • Review short and long range plans for geotechnical hazards, data gaps, and design deficiencies
  • Work with all site departments and corporate staff to ensure that mining activities and site projects progress safely and in accordance with sound geotechnical engineering principles
  • Play an active role in Teck’s geotechnical community of practice through ongoing collaboration with site geotechnical personnel and corporate engineering group

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Geological, Geotechnical, or other related subject area. Graduate level degree preferred
  • Registered, or eligible to register within 24 months of hire, as a P.Eng. with Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC)
  • Minimum 12 years’ relevant geotechnical experience, including a recent geotechnical role at a large open pit mining operation
  • Experience supervising or leading a team, including conflict resolution skills
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite®, Rocscience software packages such as Slide, Dips, SWEDGE, RocFall, and preferably RS2, AutoCAD, or Minesight software systems
  • Experience in geotechnical data analysis, site investigations, and project evaluation and management
