Manager, Social Responsibility

Reporting to the General Manager, Environment and Social Responsibility, the Manager, Social Responsibility, is accountable for the management of social risk for our Coal Business Unit. The successful candidate will lead and coordinate the activities of our Social Responsibility Team and ensure compliance with: Teck’s Environment, Health, Safety and Community Standards; long and short term Sustainability Goals; Indigenous Peoples Policy; and all related internal and external commitments to ensure excellence in our sustainability performance.

 

With understanding of the communities near our operations: respond to coal-related and corporate-related media inquiries, meet with community members and elected community leadership, and prepare strategies and supporting material to engage partners in communicating Teck’s perspective.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Build media and community relations and indigenous engagement
  • Ensure tracking and compliance with all negotiated agreements and commitments made to Indigenous Nations and Communities
  • Facilitate internal communication and integration between Social Responsibility personnel and internal partners
  • Communicate and engage with communities and Indigenous affairs in Southeast BC, Southwest Alberta, Montana, and Idaho
  • Manage our Community Investment budget and develop and maintain the strategic community investment strategy
  • Develop and implement critical communications, government relations, and community engagement plans using advertising, planning and deployment of engagement and communications processes, and maintenance of the corporate brand
  • Represent the company’s position with key partners and maintain proactive relationships with First Nations, ENGOs, community opinion-leaders, and municipal, regional, and state elected officials

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in social sciences, sustainability, social policy, public relations, or other related field
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience leading teams in communications; communities, government, and Indigenous relations functions; or relevant professional work experience
  • Outstanding knowledge of public perception in relation to social, environmental, and political issues
  • Strong understanding and experience working with Indigenous communities
  • Knowledge and experience with international principles and standard methodology related to communities and social responsibility, such as International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) and IFC Performance Standards
  • Familiarity working with the extractives sector
  • Understanding of national and regional legislative and permitting processes, government procedures, and issues management
  • Demonstrated expertise and success designing, managing, and evaluating social/community strategies and programs, in particular related to community engagement, impact management, community investment, and local content
  • Demonstrated excellence in personnel management with a shown history of excellent performance management, mentorship, and safety leadership skills
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, negotiation, and interpersonal skills and experience working with a broad range of people and groups
  • Experience monitoring and reporting on community initiatives and indicators
  • Results-oriented with excellent organizational, planning, and decision making skills
  • Outstanding analytical and writing skills and attention to detail
  • Budgeting and resource management and planning experience
  • Digital literacy in Microsoft programs and other IT programs
  • Integrity, respect, and solutions-focused with a dedication to a participatory community and sustainable development
