Lead, Fish Monitoring

Reporting to the Senior Lead, Fish Monitoring, the Lead, Fish Monitoring is responsible for leading and supervising a team of consultants and contractors to drive aquatic monitoring components that include fish population modelling and monitoring studies for operations in the Coal business unit. This includes supporting all Elk Valley site-specific major permitting applications including fisheries components of environmental assessments. Additional focus areas will include developing and managing frameworks for fisheries monitoring and population study initiatives and supporting environmental flow needs.

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Oversee the development and implementation of fish population modeling and monitoring studies, and the necessary regulatory review and engagement processes required to support ongoing operations and future development projects including environmental assessments
  • Lead and supervise contractors, consultants and provide technical direction to support business requirements
  • Develop, implement, and track budgets on an annual basis and provide monthly detailed budget reports
  • Engage with regulators, local First Nations and with mine personnel including at the Superintendent level to inform and resolve issues
  • Work closely with other departments within the broader Environment and Social Responsibility team to advance sustainable fish population studies, fish and fish habitat data collection methodology and environmental assessments
  • Provide strategic leadership at established multi-stakeholder working groups and support the ongoing efforts of maintaining strong relationships with key individual in government, local communities, and local Indigenous Nations
  • Provide critical review and guidance on permitting approaches and strategies including required engagement activities, permitting schedules, and application approach, scope and quality and supporting the development of provincial and federal regulatory applications
  • Understand, interpret, and provide technical direction on existing and emerging federal and provincial regulations related to fisheries



  • Science Degree or Diploma in an Environmental-related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of five years' experience in fish population and environmental assessments, and project management in the natural resource sector, preferably in mining
  • Registered, or eligible to be registered as a Professional Biologist
  • Technical knowledge in fish population modeling and monitoring studies
  • Solid understanding of provincial and federal regulatory approvals practices, legislation and regulations relating to fish, fish habitat and aquatic resources, especially within British Columbia
  • Working knowledge of the Federal Fisheries Act and experience in preparing Fisheries Act applications is an asset
