Drill and Blast Engineer

Reporting to the Senior Engineer Supervisor, the Drill and Blast Engineer is responsible for leading and developing a drill and blast program for mine expansion in close proximity to critical infrastructure. This is a new and unique challenge for Elkview and critical to the future success of the operation. Expectations of the role include a three to five year commitment to drilling and blasting.



  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Support the team in executing the optimized mine plan that; aligns with Teck’s safety culture, sustainability strategy, supports environmental commitments, strengthens relationships with stakeholders, reduces risk, increases shareholder confidence, and is integrated with the other Teck business areas
  • Manage loading best practices to control post blast gasses and nitrate leaching
  • Develop, implement, and lead a controlled blasting strategy that will incorporate electronic blasting, pattern size and design. Establish ongoing management through monitoring and modelling to support continued mining activities in close proximity to the community and critical infrastructure
  • Provide technical expertise, leadership, and training for both operations and technical personnel involved in drilling and blasting activities; ensure best practices are identified and followed
  • Lead drill and blast optimization through fragmentation, digability and productivity analysis using advanced analytics
  • Manage and evaluate new technologies in drilling and blasting
  • Manage blasting design to minimize impact on coal recovery and highwall stability
  • Liaison with the Teck Coal Business Unit, Drill and Blast Team, and suppliers on product enhancements and quality controls
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation pertaining to system design, key learnings, and best practices
  • Analyze data to build models, make correlations, identify trends, and predict outcomes with the goal of increasing operational efficiency across multiple disciplines
  • Grow and maintain Elkview’s sense of team through professional development, engagement, empowerment, and autonomy; building internal expertise and capacity



  • Degree in Mining Engineering or similar with a Professional Engineering registration or equivalent
  • Minimum five years’ work experience in Drilling and Blasting. Could be considered a Senior Engineering role depending on an individual’s experience and capacity
  • A thorough understanding of drilling and blasting operational practices in open-pit mining
  • Experience with Electronic Detonators considered an asset
  • Experience with Blast monitoring, controlled blasting, and blast vibration modelling considered an asset
  • Hands-on experience with bulk explosives
  • Strong interpersonal and advanced verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to influence others and work with cross-functional teams
  • Ability to work in a self-directed manner and possess good time management skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others and excel in a technical team based environment
