Powerhouse Operator Journeyperson


Red Dog, AK, US

Reporting to the Powerhouse Supervisor, the Powerhouse Operator Journeyperson installs, adjusts, maintains and repairs mechanical and electrical equipment in power-generating stations.

Rotation schedule will be two weeks on-site and two weeks off-site



  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures.
  • Apply understanding of electrical components of the Powerhouse and auxiliary equipment to include motor control circuits, process transmitters, Voltage regulators, Governor controls, pressure and temperature transmitter, Rosemount devices, transformers, lighting circuits, pneumatic valve controls, Air Handler controls, Instrumentation, and alarm circuits.
  • Understand and applies process control instrumentation system design, operation, calibration and trouble shooting.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair Power Generation Electrical Equipment, Alarms and Controls.
  • Operate and maintain the Powerhouse, perform electrical repairs and maintenance as well as operate and maintain powerhouse auxiliary Systems; cleans, lubricates parts, equipment and machinery as needed.
  • Start, Synchronize, Load /Unload and Stop Generator sets as required to meet demand.
  • Make necessary Control board adjustments for Voltage, Frequency, and Megawatts, in both Isochronous and Droop modes.
  • Disassemble machinery and equipment to remove parts and make repairs to include repair, replace, adjust, aligning components of machinery and  electrical equipment
  • Troubleshoot equipment and examines components for defects such as breakage or excessive wear;
  • Utilize hand tools, Electrical testing instruments and hydraulic tools to complete repairs and maintenance
  • Maintain current knowledge of Power Generation Electrical systems.
  • Assist with Diesel Engine Mechanical maintenance to include: Engine and component replacement or rebuild.
  • Preventive Maintenance such as oil and filter changes, Water Analysis, Emissions Testing, Heat Exchanger Cleaning and other duties as required.
  • Respond appropriately to abnormal control board readings (including gauges, digital read-outs for engine conditions), alarms sounding and correctly interpret alarms indicated and react to the problem to ensure a constant supply of electrical power.
  • Interact with a variety of employees on the property such as mechanics, engineering, trades and operating supervision on methods, procedures and hazards in order to coordinate the services of other trades and service personnel in the planning of their portion of the job; tests, evaluates and observes operation of machinery and equipment to diagnose cause of malfunction
  • Maintain an accurate record of repairs and maintenance performed; tracks and places orders and requisition for parts and materials needed to complete job effectively; completes daily paperwork for work orders, engine data and maintenance logs.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of environmental risks and hazards as well as complies with safety policies and procedures (Mining Safety Health Administrator and Red Dog EMS training) and ensures daily workplace inspections are done in order to accurately identify and correct workplace hazards
  • Ensure compliance with all established policies and standard operating procedures and advises coworkers and visitors of such policies and procedures as required
  • Perform other related duties as assigned



  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Minimum of seven years’ experience in operating and maintaining Electrical systems and components in a Prime Power Generation Plant with specific knowledge of Generator Controls and alarms is required.
  • Ability to read and understand operations and maintenance manuals is required
  • Ability to read and understand electrical schematics.
  • Knowledge and Electrical maintenance experience of diesel engines, plate type heat exchangers, pumps, piping systems, air handling units, waste heat recovery systems, air compressors, and selective catalytic reduction systems is required.
  • Ability to adhere to high safety standards
  • Able to work day, afternoon, or night shifts as required
  • A team player and able to communicate well with others
  • Highly motivated and have ability to perform tasks with limited direction
  • Able to work outdoors with a potential exposure to Arctic conditions
  • Able to perform labor intensive work when required
