Environmental Coordinator

Teck Alaska Incorporated, Red Dog Operations, one of the world's largest producers of zinc concentrate, is recruiting for an Environmental Coordinator. Due to anticipated needs, we are currently recruiting for career-oriented individuals to fill this role.

Red Dog Mine, located in Northwest Alaska, is a large, technically challenging open pit mine, mill and port facility. It is a remote, but modern and well-equipped fly-in fly-out operation that provides free room and board for employees, and regular transportation to and from Anchorage and surrounding regional villages.

Rotation schedule will be two weeks onsite and one week offsite or four weeks onsite and two weeks offsite.

This position reports to the Sr. Environmental Coordinator.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Identify and assess applicable legal and other requirements within the areas of responsibilities assigned and determine how the identified requirements apply to Red Dog’s environmental aspects.
  • Identify operational, monitoring and record keeping actions necessary to ensure full compliance with applicable legal and other requirements.  The incumbent will work with the EMS Coordinator(s) to ensure that these requirements are communicated to the workforce.
  • Provide environmental training to the workforce to help ensure compliance with applicable legal and other requirements.
  • Participate in the evaluation of compliance with all applicable legal and other requirements.
  • Assist Red Dog Operations in evaluating legal and other requirements that may be applicable when changes are proposed to the facility.
  • Keep abreast of technological developments in his/her areas of responsibility and evaluate their applicability to Red Dog Operations.
  • Coordinate data collection, sampling and monitoring activities within his/her areas of responsibilities with the Environmental Technical Supervisor.
  • Possess strong verbal and oral communication skills and technical skills that will include but not be limited to:  Microsoft Office Suite® and any other software applicable to the incumbent’s areas of responsibility.
  • Compile and submit reports to meet internal and external requirements (e.g., to agencies, corporate and communities of interest).
  • Maintain a working relationship with communities of interest and serve as one of the primary points of contact on regional affairs.
  • Uphold high moral and ethical principles in conducting Red Dog business.
  • Maintain safe work practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering or related field.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite® applications (i.e., Outlook, Word and Excel).
  • Knowledge of applicable legal and other requirements within the areas of responsibilities assigned, as they may apply to Red Dog’s environmental aspects.
  • Experience with air, water, wetlands, and waste regulations and knowledge of Environmental Management Systems.
  • Experience working under State of Alaska environmental statutes/regulations/permits and with State of Alaska environmental regulatory agencies is preferred.
  • Strong technical skills and the ability to analyze data and solve problems.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and work effectively across all levels of the business with competence to direct the activity of others.
  • An environmental compliance work history that includes the mining industry is preferred.
  • Good communication skills and a strong technical background.
