2021 Temporary Marine Mammal Observer

Teck Alaska Incorporated, Red Dog Operations, one of the world's largest producers of zinc concentrate, is recruiting for a non-exempt Temporary Marine Mammal Observer for the 2021 Port Site dredging.

Red Dog Mine, located in Northwest Alaska, is a large, technically challenging open pit mine, mill and port facility. It is a remote, but modern and well-equipped fly-in fly-out operation that provides free room and board for employees, and regular transportation to and from Anchorage and surrounding regional villages.

Rotation schedule will depend on dredging time line.  Estimated June 11, 2021 to July 15, 2021

Reporting to the Port Coordinator, the Temporary Marine Mammal Observer is responsible for marine mammal observation and observation data entry.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Observe and identify marine mammals
  • Inform Port Site operations when marine mammals are spotted and stop operations while dredging as indicated by current dredging permit.
  • Understand the different species of seals, whales , and other marine mammals
  • Data collection as required by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS)
  • Entry of daily marine mammal observations log
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of environmental risks and hazards as well as complies with safety policies and procedures and ensures daily workplace inspections are done in order to accurately identify and correct workplace hazards.
  • Ensures compliance with all established policies and standard operating procedures and advises coworkers and visitors of such policies and procedures as required.
  • Other duties as as assigned

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Marine Mammal Observation training, preferred
  • Basic skills in Microsoft Office suite applications
  • Valid Driver's License, preferred
  • Strong team cooperation is required
  • Ability to perform all tasks with limited direction
  • Work safely and follow instructions
  • Willing to work outdoors with a potential exposure to extreme climatic conditions
  • Have good organization and observation skills
