Teck Alaska Incorporated, Red Dog Operations, one of the world's largest producers of zinc concentrate, is recruiting for a Hydrogeologist. Due to anticipated needs, we are currently recruiting for a career oriented individual to fill this role.

Will be on an even Rotation schedule.


Reporting to the Water Quality Lead, Tailings and Water.



  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Protect the safety and health of employees by promoting safe working procedures and health programs in accordance with the Teck Alaska policy and appropriate regulations
  • Complete assigned work in a professional manner, including necessary measurements, calculations, analyses, interpretations, reporting and recommendations
  • Ensure that projects associated with the hydrogeological programs and mine water management systems are completed according to approved plans, specifications and development codes/permits
  • Support hydrogeological programs and investigations to better understand the hydrogeology at the operation.  Specific responsibilities include management of consultants, organization and interpretation of hydrogeological data and review/interpretation of conceptual and numerical groundwater models (MODFLOW, FEFLOW) for physical and contaminant hydrogeology
  • Supervise and oversee execution of a variety of hydrogeological assessments and work programs to characterize the groundwater at the mine, including drilling and monitoring, well design and construction, routine site inspections, and groundwater modelling/estimations of groundwater inflows to open pits and other mine areas
  • Assist in managing the site’s water resources and water quality, including maintenance and updates to the operational water and load balance model (GoldSim), contributing to the development of the site’s Water Management Plan and Operating, Maintenance and Monitoring Plan, ensuring adherence to Teck’s Water Governance initiatives.  Other responsibilities include updating and maintaining water quality mass balances & predictions, and assessment of ARD interception well performance, site water quality monitoring data, and groundwater monitoring wells
  • Assist the Water Quality Lead in the geochemical characterization of acid rock drainage and metals leaching potential through interpretation of findings from the various site geochemical programs
  • Aggregating, organizing, managing, and analyzing data on groundwater, surface water, subsurface water, pumping, climate, demographics, typically in a GIS/database environment (Esri ArcGIS)
  • Experience in water quality and predictive water quality modeling is considered an asset (geochemical modeling, geochemist workbench, PHREEQC, GoldSim)
  • Data manipulation/analysis in spreadsheets, databases, and GIS using automation techniques such as macros, VBA, Perl, Python
  • Communicate effectively with operating, geology, technical groups and contractors to meet the operation’s overall objectives
  • Develop an understanding of the Company’s organizational structure and how to successfully execute and complete work tasks within it
  • Other responsibilities as required or as assigned



  • Bachelor’s degree in Earth, Environmental or Geological Sciences, Hydrogeology, Environmental or Water Resources Engineering or other similar program with a strong emphasis on hydrogeology
  • Minimum of four years of relevant experience in physical and contaminant hydrogeology, including hydrogeological and hydrological investigations related to water management at mine sites
  • Demonstrated experience in surface water and groundwater monitoring, including borehole drilling/monitoring well installation, hydrogeological logging methods for field sampling, and understanding of aquifer testing.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use and application of groundwater modelling softwares (MODFLOW, FEFLOW).  Proficiency in water balance software (GoldSim) is also considered an asset
  • Exposure to mining in cold climates is considered an asset, but is not required
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, manipulate, and efficiently visualize large quantities of hydrogeological and water quality related data
  • Project coordination and project management skills are considered an asset
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and communication skills.  Strong technical writing skills are an asset
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Capable of working with all levels of the organization and in a team environment
  • Self-starter with willingness to take on additional tasks as required
