Geologist - 2019 Field Season

We are currently seeking individuals for the role of Geologists for the 2019 Field Season.

 

These openings are seasonal, varying in term from 2-9 months and typically begin in April.   

 

Reporting to the Senior Geologist, Senior Project Geologist, or Project Geologist, the Geologist is the first level of Field Exploration, responsible for conducting the search for mineral deposits by planning, administering and executing effective programs. Primary responsibilities are to investigate, interpret, analyze and test data. These positions are focused on zinc, early stage through to near mine projects.

 

About Red Dog 
Red Dog Operations is one of the world's largest zinc mines, located about 170 km north of the Arctic Circle in northwest Alaska, near Kotzebue. We are currently exploring in the Red Dog district, where we have 350 km2 of highly prospective land.

 

Red Dog is a fly-in, fly-out site with typical rotation schedules being 14 days on and 7 days off or 14 days on and 14 days off. Transportation from your home to site will be provided as will meals and accommodations while you are onsite or in transit. Accommodations will be in camp facilities. Travel to site may include commercial and charter flights, a layover in Anchorage, and shuttle buses. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures. 
  • Make field observations and understand the general regional geological context and relevant ore deposit models at play on the project. 
  • Conduct geochemical sampling, log core and organize data.
  • Collect and process geological and geochemical data.
  • Ensure activities are consistent with EHS policies and management systems, as guided by the Charter of Corporate Responsibility, the Code of Business, Environmental and Health and Safety Practices and the EHS Management Standards.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical reports.
  • Maintain and develop professional competencies by keeping abreast of technical advances and expanding personal technical knowledge.
  • Contribute to the planning of projects by collecting and interpreting field observations and suggesting possible future action steps.
  • Communicate with supervisor on a regular basis and report all material exploration results on a timely basis.
  • Promote a safety leadership culture by ensuring that proper safety practices are followed in accordance with Teck’s health and safety policies.
  • Actively seek opportunities to recognize health and safety hazards, resolves safety issues and works to mitigate associated risks in the workplace. 

 

Qualifications:

  • Completion of a post-secondary geoscience degree is required, some field or academic project work would be beneficial.
  • Good written and oral English, secondary language is an asset.
  • Effective communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Good observational, critical thinking, data analysis and problem solving skills.
  • A results-focused attitude and strong time management skills.
  • A team player with a collaborative approach.
  • Ability to work in remote or challenging physical environments, including hiking in undeveloped terrain with gear.
  • Ability to work a rotation schedule and live onsite in a camp environment. 
  • Legally entitled to work in the USA.
