Dam Safety Engineer Tailings & Water

Teck Alaska Incorporated, Red Dog Operations, one of the world's largest producers of zinc concentrate, is recruiting for a Dam Safety Engineer, Tailings & Water. Due to anticipated needs, we are currently recruiting for a career oriented individual to fill this role.
Rotation schedule will be two weeks onsite and two week offsite.

Reporting to the Team Leader, Tailings & Water Dam Safety Engineer is responsible for following best management practices for operating and managing the tailings storage facility. 


  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Protect the safety and health of employees by promoting safe working procedures and health programs in accordance with Teck Alaska policy and appropriate regulations
  • Aggregating, organizing, managing, and analyzing data on dam instrumentation (piezometers, etc), groundwater, surface water, subsurface water, pumping, climate, demographics, etc., typically in a GIS/database environment (Esri ArcGIS)
  • Data manipulation/analysis in spreadsheets, databases, and GIS using automation techniques such as macros, VBA, etc
  • Develop, track and report on operational metrics using KPIs, management of change, schedules and develop recovery plans
  • Provide engineering expertise for the operation and construction of the tailings storage facility and conduct studies related to new or future developments or opportunities relevant to the Red Dog Operation
  • Complete field inspections on a routine basis and assist other junior engineers to troubleshoot geotechnical instrumentation in the field
  • Technical writing for operations and project documents, manuals and training programs, as well as technical review of reports from external consultants
  • Manage projects to ensure the quality and quantity of work being performed meets the operation’s needs.  Ensure that projects associated with the Tailings Management Facility are completed according to approved plans, specifications and development codes/permit
  • Develop and maintain the project schedule in conjunction with the Tailings and Water team to meet specified milestones and completion dates
  • Effectively communicate with operating, geology, technical groups and contractors; and liaise with outside agencies to meet the operations overall objectives
  • Develop and issue tailings deposition management plans including report on adherence to the plan with KPIs
  • Work effectively with other departments and contractors to ensure property wide projects are completed and property wide objectives are met
  • Ensure that all engineering services provided comply with environmental regulations, State agencies and programs
  • Effectively manage contractors and consultants 
  • Contribute to cost control by participating in annual budget preparation, monitoring, forecasting and analyzing monthly costs and explaining variances
  • Develop an understanding of the Company’s organization and how to get things done within it
  • Other responsibilities as required or as assigned


  • BSc. Engineering or equivalent with Civil, Geological or Geotechnical specializations
  • A minimum of four (4) years’ experience in dam construction, tailings storage facility and tailings management, tailings deposition management, geotechnical engineering, mining or a closely related field
  • A minimum of four years’ experience with Project Management
  • Experience in Tailings Storage Facility Management in arctic conditions would be considered an asset
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D Software is required
  • Knowledge of limit equilibrium and numerical models such as FLAC, Geostudio, RocScience, etc. would be considered an asset
  • Strong technical background including experience with mine projects; heavy civil including dams construction, management and operation is preferred
  • Previous experience in budgeting, cost tracking, cost forecasting and project scheduling would be considered an asset
  • Previous experience and knowledge of using analytics tools such as Power BI for measuring KPIs would be considered an asset
  • Previous experience and knowledge of tailings deposition management would be considered an asset
  • Excellent computer skills, particularly spreadsheets, word processing, presentation and drafting applications.
  • Superior interpersonal, organizational and communication skills (verbal and written) working in a remote team environment
  • Ability to communicate and implement recommendations to the Tailings & Water team related to management, contractors and workforce; and
  • Enthusiasm and ability to take on additional tasks as needed
  • Capable of working with all levels of the organization and in a team environment
  • Work with limited supervision and initiate projects independently
