Advanced Process Control & Automation Systems Team Leader

Reporting to the Operating Superintendent, Concentrator, the Advanced Process Control & Automation Systems Team Leader is accountable for researching the suitability and where appropriate supporting the implementation and use of advanced control systems, including advanced machine learning, expert systems, and other advanced automation throughout the Red Dog Operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Improve advanced process control and automation by evaluating new technology and recommending implementation where cost effective, maintaining communications with suppliers and other Teck operations.
  • Provide process control and automation expertise as well as conduct studies related to new or future developments or opportunities relevant to Red Dog Operations.
  • Ensure that the property has effective, secure, and well-documented process control systems to ensure cost effective process control and data acquisition.
  • Communicate effectively with operating, technical, maintenance, and other groups to ensure optimum utilization of resources.
  • Mentor and train all members of the process control team to promote their technical growth.
  • Demonstrate safe work practices personally. Create positive discussion with other co-workers to ensure compliance with safety policy at all times.  Enforce regulations and policies when applicable.
  • Establish Personal Goals and Objectives annually that align with Departmental Goals and Objectives. (These require Supervisor approval and will be evaluated in regards to attainment during Performance Planning and Coaching reviews).
  • Reinforce regulations and policies when applicable.
  • Contribute to cost control by participating in annual budget preparation, monitoring and analyzing costs and explaining variances.
  • Ensure the long-range operating objectives of the Red Dog Mine are met by providing input into capital budget expenditures.
  • The incumbent is aware of and has signed off on the Teck “Whistleblower Policy” and will promote and adhere to the company’s “Code of Ethics”.
  • Relieves for critical positions when required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • An engineering undergraduate degree (metallurgy, chemical, electrical, process control); a relevant advanced degree will be considered favorably.
  • 10 years of experience applying advanced process control, including adaptive control, of which a minimum of 3 years must be in a leadership position.
  • Experience with process control hardware and instrumentation in a mining and milling environment would be preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of databases, computer programming, and networking experience would be a significant asset.
  • Capable of working with all levels of the organization and in a team environment.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Advanced analytical, problem solving and decision making abilities
  • Proven and exemplary leadership skills
  • Superior interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
