Senior Dam Safety Engineer - 2 Year Temporary or Permanent

We are currently seeking a motivated individual for the role of Senior Dam Safety Engineer, reporting to the Chief Tailings Engineer. This role will be responsible for leading the implementation of the new Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management and achieving Teck’s goal of compliance with the new standard by mid-2023. 

 

The successful candidate will bring experience in the mining industry, specifically with dam safety and tailings facility management. They will have a proven track record of leading change using their abilities to influence and communicate. They will have demonstrated experience presenting to stakeholders and community members. They will be highly motivated, results oriented, and thrive in teamwork environments. Experience managing consultants will be an asset.

 

This position presents an excellent opportunity to lead a major change initiative at a world-class tailings facility, supported by a team of experienced dam safety and tailings engineers at the site and corporate level. There will be ample opportunity to collaborate with experts from across Teck’s sites. Additional tasks will be provided to support the Tailings and Water Management Department, including participation with the Tailings Review Board.

 

Assigned tasks will include risk assessment and credible failure mode reviews, update of dam breach mapping, and communication of the results with stakeholders and community members. Development of emergency response and recovery plans with community participation will be a core activity. The position will require extensive community and stakeholder engagement.

 

Located in the interior of British Columbia, the mine is a 50 minute drive from the city of Kamloops, which has a population of 90,000, and provides all the comforts of city living and is home to Thompson Rivers University. The mine is also close to Logan Lake, Merritt, Ashcroft and Cache Creek which all provide a small town community atmosphere. The area offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities such as hiking, mountain biking, boating, fishing and world class skiing and championship golfing.

Responsibilities: 

 

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Lead the implementation of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) for the HVC site, in coordination with the Chief Tailings Engineer and supported by the existing Senior Dam Safety Engineer
  • Coordinate site resources from across multiple departments as the change leader for the GISTM
  • Manage consultants to complete technical tasks related to the GISTM, including risk register, credible failure mode evaluations and, where required based upon credible failure modes, dam breach inundation updates
  • Implement a data and reporting transparency initiative
  • Represent HVC in community engagement of tailings management initiatives
  • Support the Senior Dam Safety Engineer as required to align with the GISTM requirements
  • Present to the Tailings Review Board, Site Management and Teck’s Corporate Tailings Leadership
  • Will be required to work weekends and extended hours as needed
  • Other work as assigned

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent in Mining, Civil or Geotechnical specializations. Graduate degree considered an asset
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer in BC or able to register within 1 year
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a related engineering field
  • Experience with mining dam safety and/or tailings engineering in a mining setting
  • Demonstrated understanding of broader environmental and community issues in terms of mine wastes will be seen as a differentiating asset
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills as well as effective interpersonal and problem-solving abilities
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Previous experience with tailings management and related guidance documents is an asset (GISTM, MAC, CDA, etc)
