Requirements

Successful candidates must be motivated self-starters, able to work under minimal supervision and be able to manage several projects simultaneously.  The positions require working outdoors in all weather conditions and the ability to operate 4-wheel drive vehicles in mountainous terrain. You will also be required to have steel-toed boots (which must reach at least above the ankle) before commencing work.

Preference is given to candidates working towards a geotechnical, civil or geological degree. The positions also require strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is necessary, and a working knowledge of PowerPoint, Access and AutoCAD would be advantageous. Operational experience is an asset.

All students will be required to complete pre-employment drug testing prior to commencing work.

Responsibilities

Geologist or Geotechnical Engineering co-op students at Teck Resources Ltd. will be given an opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge related to geotechnical monitoring programs at site and for providing support for analysis and design to minimize safety and business risks and to strive for continuous improvement.

The major responsibilities of a Geologist or Geotechnical Engineering co-op student are as follows:

  • Involvement in the health and safety programs of Teck Resources Ltd. to ensure that everyone on site goes home safe and healthy every day
  • Support geophysical logging, pit sampling and mapping, and exploration
  • Support department members with geotechnical related tasks including slope design and analysis, geotechnical field tours and site investigations
  • The student will get experience in open pit mining, with exposure to geotechnical data analysis, site investigations, project evaluation and project management
  • Strong computer skills are required with experience in Microsoft Office Suite ® and willing to learn other programs/systems such as Slide, Dips, AutoCAD and MineSight
  • Some positions are responsible for assisting in the tailings department which include (but not limited to):
  • Compliance to tailings management system and legal requirements
  • Assisting to ensure the safe operations, surveillance, and ongoing construction of the tailings facility and water impoundment dams
