Dam Safety Engineer

We are currently seeking a motivated individual for the role of Dam Safety Engineer, reporting to the Senior Dam Safety Engineer. The Dam Safety Engineer will be responsible for managing the geotechnical monitoring system and reporting on dam performance for a world class tailings storage facility, as well as a network of water retaining structures and legacy tailings facilities. 


The role will include drilling and installation of monitoring instruments, interpretation and review of results, training of technicians, and reporting. In addition, ample opportunity will be provided to manage projects and contractors, participate in dam safety inspections, support dam construction, and attend and present at review board meetings. The Tailings and Water Department at Highland Valley Copper provides an excellent introduction to the field of Tailings Management.


Located in the interior of British Columbia, the mine is a 50 minute drive from the city of Kamloops, which has a population of 90,000, and provides all the comforts of city living and is home to Thompson Rivers University.  The mine is also close to Logan Lake, Merritt, Ashcroft and Cache Creek which all provide a small town community atmosphere. The area offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities such as hiking, mountain biking, boating, fishing and world class skiing and championship golfing.




  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures 
  • Maintain the dam monitoring network and track performance of instruments
  • Plan the monthly work for a group of mine technicians in coordination with the Dam Safety Supervisor
  • Report on monitoring system function, results, and interpretation to the Chief Tailings Engineer and prepare weekly reports
  • Manage large drilling programs and instrument automation campaigns
  • Manage dam maintenance work
  • Support the Senior Dam Safety Engineer for all dam safety and governance initiatives
  • Participate in dam safety inspections
  • Support the Engineer of Record’s monthly reviews
  • Present to the Tailings Review Board and Site Management
  • Will be required to work weekends and extended hours as needed
  • Other work as assigned




  • B.Sc. Engineering or equivalent in Mining, Civil or Geotechnical specializations
  • Registered as an EIT in BC or able to register within 1 year is a requirement 
  • Experience with field data collection, geotechnical instruments, and conducting field investigations is an asset
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a related engineering field
  • Experience in a mining environment is an asset
  • Previous experience with tailings management and related guidance documents is an asset 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Valid driver’s license
