Manager, Mine Waste & Water

Reporting to the Director, Environmental Legacies, the Manager, Mine Waste and Water aims to protect and enhance the Company’s reputation and financial interests through responsible and forward-looking management of legacy properties. This role could be based in one of our multiple office locations however, regular travel to the Kimberley office would be required.

 

On a risk-prioritized basis, the incumbent directs the assessment and evaluation of engineering risks at Teck’s Canadian legacy properties, and supports the assessment, selection, and oversight for the development and implementation of all mine waste and water remediation solutions with the objective of reducing or eliminating risks to people and the environment. 

 

The incumbent has overall responsibility for the management of tailings and water retaining structures and mine waste facilities in Canada in accordance with applicable regulations, industry standards and Teck’s Corporate governance on tailings and water, in addition to providing guidance and support on legacy facilities outside Canada.

Key Accountabilities

 

  • Ensure that worker health and safety is foremost and reflects the expectation that all workers, including contractors, will go home safe and healthy every day.
  • Assist in populating the Legacy Properties Risk Register by identification and risk rating to ensure commitments are met taking into consideration the risk rating of each activity.
  • Manage the engineering aspects of ongoing care and maintenance of over 30 legacy properties in a range of jurisdictions in Canada, including BC, Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland, Yukon, NWT, and Nunavut. Provide guidance and leadership for activities related to tailings and water retaining structures and mine waste facilities at sites outside Canada. 
  • Ensure that all tailings and water retaining structures, mine waste structures, appurtenances and diversions are regularly inspected and managed in accordance with regulations, industry standards and Teck’s tailings and water governance. 
  • Inform the development and implementation of closure / post closure frameworks for Legacy sites containing tailings and water retaining structures and mine waste facilities.
  • Manage a select number of properties in the Canadian portfolio, which includes ensuring all regulatory and Corporate requirements are met and all site activities are conducted safely. This may include supporting the closure of some sites or modifications of previously closed sites to current standards. 
  • Manage the preparation of long-term cost estimates for Decommissioning and Reclamation Provision liability accounting, annual and project-specific detailed budgets and provide effective cost control related to engineering projects and select sites in the Canadian portfolio.
  • Ensure proper controls, management and oversight of expenditures.
  • Conduct or assist with regulatory, public, and First Nations consultations and negotiations.
  • Participate in the development of mine emergency response plans and emergency planning exercises. 
  • Participate in Teck Tailings Governance Reviews, which includes visits to sites across Teck operating sites. 
  • Participate on SERA advisory groups as required and provide input in area of technical expertise to other business units where possible. 
  • Participate as member of joint venture management committees as required and coordinate management meetings for select sites managed as a joint venture.
