Dam Safety Engineer

Teck Alaska Incorporated, Red Dog Operations, one of the world's largest producers of zinc concentrate, is recruiting for a Dam Safety Engineer, Tailings & Water. Due to anticipated needs, we are currently recruiting for a career oriented individual to fill this role.

Rotation schedule will be 2 weeks on-site with 2 weeks off-site 

Reporting to the Team Leader, Tailings & Water.


  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Protect the safety and health of employees by promoting safe working procedures and health programs in accordance with Teck Alaska policy and appropriate regulations
  • Aggregating, organizing, managing, and analyzing data on various dam instrumentation (piezometers, thermistors, inclinometers), groundwater, surface water, subsurface water, pumping rates, climate, demographics, typically in database environment
  • Responsibility to identify and resolve technical and installation issues on dam instrumentation or operational practices and ensures adherence to relevant guidelines, policies, and regulations
  • Communicate effectively using data manipulation/analysis in spreadsheets and databases utilizing automation techniques such as macros, VBA
  • Develop, track and report on operational metrics using KPIs, management of change, schedules and develop recovery plans
  • Provide engineering expertise for operations and construction of the tailings storage facility as well as conduct studies related to new or future developments or opportunities relevant to the Red Dog Operation
  • Technical writing for operations and project documents, manuals and training programs, as well as technical review of various reports from external consultants
  • Review and monitor all operations and field activities related to dam operations, monitoring, and surveillance program.  Prepare daily, weekly, monthly reports for as required
  • Manage projects to ensure the quality and quantity of work being performed meets the operation’s needs.  Ensure that projects associated with the Tailings Management Facility are completed according to approved plans, specifications, budget and development codes/permits
  • Develop and maintain project schedules in conjunction with the Tailings and Water team to meet specified milestones and completion dates
  • Effectively communicate with operating, geology, technical groups and contractors; and liaise with outside agencies to meet Red Dog Operation’s overall objectives
  • Work effectively with other departments and contractors to ensure property wide projects are completed and objectives are met
  • Responsible for ensuring all engineering services provided comply with environmental regulations, State agencies and programs or company initiatives
  • Contribute to cost control by participating in budget preparation, monitoring, forecasting and analyzing monthly costs expenditures and communicating variances
  • Participate in developing junior professionals and other team members by participating in their training, mentoring, and by following, enforcing and administering company policies in a fair and equitable manner
  • Develop an understanding of the Company’s organization and accomplish both group and individual goals
  • Other responsibilities as required or as assigned


  • BSc. Engineering or equivalent with Civil or Structural Geotechnical specializations
  • Must be able to obtain a Professional Engineering designation within five (5) years
  • A minimum of seven (7) years’ experience in dam construction, tailings storage facility and tailings management, geotechnical engineering, or a closely related field
  • A minimum of four years’ experience with project management and cost controls
  • Experience in Tailings Storage Facility Management in arctic conditions would be considered an asset
  • Experience and use of AutoCAD Civil 3D Software and Muk3D is required.
  • Knowledge of limit equilibrium and numerical models such as FLAC, Geostudio, RocScience, would be considered an asset
  • Strong technical background including experience with mine projects; heavy civil including dams construction, management and operation is preferred
  • Extensive experience in budgeting, cost tracking, cost forecasting and project scheduling would be considered an asset
  • Previous experience and knowledge of using advanced analytics tools such as Power BI for measure KPIs metrics is preferred
  • Excellent computer skills, particularly spreadsheets, word processing, presentation and drafting applications
  • Superior interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to communicate and implement recommendations to the Tailings & Water team related to management, contractors and workforce
  • Willingness and ability to take on additional tasks as needed
  • Capable of working with all levels of the organization and in a team environment

Successful candidates must be fully vaccinated against infection by COVID-19, subject to an exemption approved by Teck Alaska.
