Geologist - NewRange

Job Summary:

NewRange is looking for a motivated geologist to support the advancement of the NorthMet and Mesaba Cu-Ni-PGE projects, located in northern Minnesota. Reporting to the Geoscience Lead, the successful applicant will be primarily responsible for logging and sampling drill core, and for delivering geological interpretations that contribute to resource modelling and mine planning. The geologist can also expect to participate in field activities to ensure the safe and efficient execution of drilling and mapping programs.

Overview:

Located in the historic iron range mining region of northeastern Minnesota, NewRange is a joint venture between Teck American Inc. (Teck) and PolyMet Mining Corp (PolyMet) that is advancing two major copper-nickel-platinum-palladium deposits, NorthMet and Mesaba. Project activities range from readying the feasibility stage NorthMet project for a production decision pending clearance of mine permits to advancing the nearby Mesaba project to pre-feasibility studies and permitting.  NewRange is committed to unlocking a new domestic supply chain of critical metals for the transition to a low-carbon economy and positioning Minnesota as a world leader in sustainable mineral resource development.

Responsibilities:

• Promote a safety leadership culture by ensuring that proper safety practices are followed in accordance with NewRange’s health and safety policies.
• Responsible for detailed geological logging, interpretation, and sampling of drill core.
• Conduct fieldwork including geological mapping, and drill site management and reclamation as required.
• Organize data and samples and prepare samples for shipment.
• Support digitization, management, and interpretation of geoscience data.
• Integration and transformation of geoscience data and information into knowledge that directly contributes to resource modelling, mine planning, and mine design.
• Working directly with drill contractors and survey crews on the Mesaba project site and NorthMet mine site.
• Support with daily environmental and health and safety tasks, and project management tasks as requested.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

• Completion of a post-secondary geoscience or relevant degree is required, some field or academic project work preferred.
• Relevant geoscience experience, including exposure to mineral exploration in greenfields and/or brownfields environments, specific experiences in the geology of magmatic sulfide deposits, core logging, geotechnical logging, drill site management, geologic mapping, geochemical and geophysical applications are all viewed as assets.
• Familiarity with software such as ArcGIS, Leapfrog, ioGAS, Excel, and PowerPoint is preferred.
• Proactive, attentive to detail, and results oriented.
• Excellent organizational, planning, management, and decision-making skills.
• First Aid training and/or Wilderness First Aid training, and/or MSHA certification is an asset.
• Ability to safely lift and move core boxes (up to 50 lbs) frequently and stand for extended periods.
• Willing to contribute to a team that shares responsibility for project deliverables and outcomes.
• Fluent spoken and written English language skills are required.
• Eligibility to work in the United States is required.
