Payroll Administrator

Anchorage, AK, US Red Dog, AK, US

Reporting to the Accounting Supervisor, the Payroll Administrator is responsible for maintaining the payroll records for Teck Alaska Incorporated.   The position is responsible for preparing, distributing, and recording hourly and salaried payrolls, and ensuring the timely and accurate submission of required information in a confidential manner, as well as compliance with contractual and legal obligations.

This position will be located in the Anchorage Teck office; work schedule will be Monday - Friday 8am-5pm

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Responsible for the preparation and processing of biweekly and other payrolls. Review and ensure accuracy of time entry; track and deduct all garnishments and other special payroll deductions. Ensure the accurate and timely transmission of payroll data files, which include Automated Clearing House (ACH) network, Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), and Benefit Outsourcers (Merrill Lynch)
  • Ensure the accurate and timely preparation and payments of pay period, monthly, quarterly and annual government reporting and requirements,
  • Responsible for reconciliation of payroll related general ledger accounts including assisting the finance team with month-end entries
  • Maintain and research up-to-date information of State and Federal laws affecting pay, benefits, taxes and garnishments, contacting such agencies as required to assure compliance
  • Responsible for the coordination and preparation of payroll reports required by the Human Resource Department, the Accounting Department and Red Dog Business Unit Managers
  • Administer worker’s compensation benefit claim and annual assessment reporting; including reporting estimates to risk management as required
  • Verification of payroll related updates done by the Human Resource Department
  • Manage PTO and R&R banks ensuring that that payroll-related policies are maintained including PTO earned time, payouts, and advances
  • Initiates, recommends and implements improvements in the preparation of payroll data
  • Exercise leadership skills within the Finance group supporting and mentoring co-workers as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree in Accounting, Business or another finance-related field or years of experience may substitute in lieu of degree for required experience
  • A minimum of five (5) years of payroll administration experience
  • Working knowledge of US payroll tax requirements and applicable legislation
  • Able to maintain a high standard of confidentiality and ethics on all payroll related matters
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles as they relate to payroll and benefit accounting as well as human resource and benefit procedures
  • Strong skills using and understanding the flow of transactions in an integrated and automated payroll accounting system
  • Must be proficient in MS Office Suite and Windows environment and able to thrive in a fast-paced setting with advanced abilities in MS Excel
  • Excellent communication, facilitation and experience of working co-operatively as a team member
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills required
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and documentation, including the ability to articulate ideas and communicate needs in a concise manner
  • Must have proficient writing skills; be highly organized and able to work with minimal guidance
  • Must be task oriented, self-motivated and have the inherent ability to multi-task, work under pressure, meet deadlines and work as a team-player
  • Strong organizational skills are an asset

Successful candidates must be fully vaccinated against infection by COVID-19, subject to an exemption approved by Teck Alaska.
