Technician, Aquatic Sciences (Contract)

Reporting to the Senior Lead, Aquatic Sciences, the Technician, Aquatic Sciences (Contract) is responsible for supporting and implementing complex aquatic effects monitoring and scientific field investigations, that include surface water quality, benthic invertebrate, and fish sampling. This role involves working closely with our mining operations, consulting teams, and other groups within Sustainable Development. This role offers a unique combination of field and office work, allowing diversity in your everyday tasks. This contract will expire at the end of 2024, with opportunity for extension.

You must have strong analytical and decision-making abilities, with an aptitude for practical problem solving. Most importantly, we require someone who has excellent interpersonal and communication skills, who can communicate effectively and build strong relationships with environmental teams at the operations, contractors and with consulting teams to complete work efficiently and safely. The position requires a broad scientific interest, technical skills, and support for project management.

You will support and collaborate with all departments and develop technical skills through working with complex multi-disciplinary teams to support the coordination and implementation of Aquatic Sciences field programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Schedule, plan resources, and effectively communicate with site environmental teams to support and implement broad-based aquatic science sampling and monitoring programs, studies, and other activities, to confirm compliance with our regulatory requirements and support evaluation of current conditions
  • Support data management from field collection to reporting, including supporting field teams in data naming procedures and working closely with multiple laboratories to confirm accurate reports for upload to Teck’s EQuIS database
  • Input, track and review water quality and aquatic biological monitoring data into centralized data management systems (i.e., EQuIS), to maintain quality assurance and quality control, analysis, and reporting of environmental data
  • Provide technical, administrative, and project management support, as well as contractor supervision
  • Develop and review environmental health and safety documents and environmental protection work plans
  • Work efficiently and independently in outdoor remote locations, in inclement weather conditions

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in an environmental related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered
  • Minimum two years’ experience in the field of environmental compliance or monitoring
  • Experience with environmental data management software such as GIS/EQuIS and proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite®
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license, with the ability to safely operate a 4x4 truck
  • Familiarity with provincial and federal environmental legislation an asset

 

Hourly Range: $45.00 - $55.00

 

The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.

 

Successful candidates must be willing to satisfy the pre-employment requirements of a pre-employment drug screen and three professional references.
